DALeast

DALeast is a Chinese street artist (*1984) who was born in Wuhan, lived in Cape Town, South Africa, for several years and currently lives in Berlin. He keeps his real name a secret from the public and has been painting since the age of three, before studying sculpture at the Institute of Fine Arts in Wuhan.

As a founding member of one of the first artist collectives dedicated to public art in China, DALeast has been active in the Chinese graffiti scene since 2004. Dissatisfied with the school's teaching methods, he dropped out of university without graduating to continue his artistic practice and learn new techniques while travelling. Today, he is a restless citizen of the world and continues to spray walls on all continents. DALeast's signature style is the metallic-sculptural aesthetic of his paintings, which consist entirely of wire-like arrangements. In his works, he attempts to depict the tense relationship between organic and synthetic motifs. Through his paintings, he creates optical illusions of skeletal figures made up of spiralling lines that can be quite disorientating to the viewer. All creatures can be seen as the artist's unique pictorial interpretation of half-robotic and half-biotic individuals, reflecting the coexistence of natural and artificial proportions in the world.
