Christo and Jeanne-Claude

The artist couple Christo and Jeanne-Claude became world-famous for their monumental environmental artworks and spectacular wrapping campaigns. Their joint work began in 1961 with the „Dockside Packages and Stacked Oil Barrels“ project in Cologne harbour. A central aspect of their work was the connection to „New Realism“, a movement that emphasised everyday life and its objects. By packaging buildings or everyday objects, they encouraged the viewer to re-evaluate their surroundings and experience the transience of the moment.

Her best-known works include the wrapping of the Reichstag in Berlin (1995), the project „The Gates“ in New York's Central Park (2005) and the posthumous realisation of the wrapping of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris in 2021. Her monumental working methods have always transcended the traditional boundaries between painting, sculpture and architecture. Whether in urban spaces or vast landscapes, her temporary installations invited people around the world to actively interact with the artwork. The concept of her work often refers to principles of New Realism in terms of the use of everyday objects and the transformation of industrial materials.
