The Milan-born brothers Roberto (*1965) and Renato (*1968) Miaz have spent two and a half decades developing an artistic philosophy that combines classical tradition with experimental techniques. Their path led them away from a purely academic career towards a multifaceted creative process that initially included art installations for Milanese bars and later design projects for global brands such as Adidas, Nike and Swatch. This phase of commercial work, especially during their time in Paris, enabled them to achieve economic independence and finally devote themselves fully to their main field of activity: painting.
Their style is based on the principle of the „Renaissance man“, whereby experiences from travelling and experiments in various fields flow into their work. At the centre of their work is portraiture, which they reinterpret using a precise airbrush technique. The Miaz Brothers„ most striking feature is the deliberate blurring of their motifs. The fine layers of spray paint make the figures depicted - often inspired by classical portraits from the 16th and 17th centuries - appear as if through a “mist of time".
Through this visual alienation, the brothers challenge the audience's perception. The painting merely acts as an impulse; the actual interpretation and completion of the picture takes place in the viewer's individual visual memory. This playful approach to familiarity and abstraction has earned them international recognition. After stints in New York, Valencia and Amsterdam, they settled in London, where they quickly became part of the contemporary scene. One of their most prominent admirers is Damien Hirst, who has already acquired entire exhibitions by the brothers for his personal collection.
