Banksy

Banksy is a world-renowned but anonymous graffiti artist and political activist with roots in the Bristol underground scene. He is famous for his stencil art, which often conveys subversive, humorous and anti-capitalist messages. His works can be found on walls, building facades and bridges around the world and address current social and political events. A striking example of his interventions is the „Vandalised Phone Box“, which is a metaphor for the transformation of communication and the death of old forms in the digital age.

In addition to stencils, Banksy also creates large-format oil paintings such as „Are You Using That Chair?“, a reinterpretation of Edward Hopper's „Nighthawks“, in which he critically examines topics such as hooliganism and national identity. His work also includes film projects such as the Oscar-nominated documentary „Exit Through the Gift Shop“ and large-scale installation projects such as „The Walled Off Hotel“ in Bethlehem. The action in 2018, in which his work „Girl With Balloon“ shredded itself during an auction, caused a particular international stir. This action embodied his radical criticism of the traditional art market and emphasised the ephemeral nature of his art.
